The Lion Academy

Camp Hill SD offers CAOLA courses through 5 different vendors--Edison Learning, Accelerate Education, eDynamic Learning, StrongMind, and Keys to Driving.  Course offerings are updated annually by CAOLA.

What is CAOLA?

• CAOLA is the Capital Area Online Learning Association.
• It is the largest online learning consortium in the state of Pennsylvania. This program is overseen by the Capital Area Intermediate Unit #15.
• Unlike outside the district cyber charter programs, the consortium component of the program allows for students to remain enrolled in the Camp Hill School District while taking advantage of online learning opportunities.

What does a typical day look like for a Lion Academy student?

• As with all online curriculum options, whether it be the Lion Academy or an out of district cyber charter program, the day can be designed by parents/caregivers to meet your child’s needs.
• Parents/Caregivers work with our Lion Academy staff to create a schedule for work completion.
• The expectation would be for some level of engagement for 5 to 6 hours per day.
• Types of activities in Lion Academy courses include:
  • Multimedia mix of streaming videos
  • Podcasts, text and voice discussion forums
  • Interactive gaming environments
  • Project based learning
  • A tutor available when your child needs extra support
  • Career and Technical education
• Parents/caregivers play a direct role in helping their children through the learning process.
• All courses and curriculums used are aligned to core standards to prepare your child for PSSA, Keystone and other state testing. 

What is the advantage of the Lion Academy vs. an out-of-district cyber charter program?

• The Lion Academy provides the opportunity for your child to remain enrolled in Camp Hill School District and developing a flexible schedule that meets their individual needs.
• For students that means:
  • Enrolling in the Lion Academy program is seamless and can happen without withdrawing your child.
  • Returning to the brick and mortar school can also happen seamlessly without needing to go through the enrollment process, which means quicker transition times between online learning and return to traditional school.
  • Student schedules created in conjunction with your child’s school counselor and closely monitored by the counselor who knows your child.
  • Consistent communication and support from a Camp Hill staff member, as well as individualized progress monitoring, improvement plans, accommodations, and interventions based on each student's needs.
  • Ability to attain Honor Roll status and qualify for National Honor Society.
  • Access to school facilities, resources, events, activities and field trips.
  • Access to ALL extracurricular activities because your child is a Camp Hill Student. (Enrollment in outside of district cyber charter programs may limit your child’s ability to participate in some extracurricular activities.) These may include, but are not limited to:
    • Band
    • Chorus
    • Grade-level drama performances
• Students will receive a Camp Hill report card, transcripts and diploma when enrolled in the Lion Academy program.
• Enrollment in out-of-district cyber charter programs results in the district paying that program between $13,000 and $29,000 per student. Our partnership with CAOLA allows for Lion Academy courses to be roughly 1/3 of that cost.

How likely is my child to succeed using the Lion Academy curriculum? 

• For the current 2024-2025 school year, the Camp Hill School District has 44 full-time K-12 and 115 part-time 6-12 students utilizing CAOLA courses as part of the Lion Academy. These students are enrolled in a wide variety of course offerings to meet their individual learning needs.
• During the 2023-2024 school year, the completion and passing rates for students enrolled in Lion Academy courses were:
  • 95% of the students completed 90% or more of the course content
  • 96% of the students earned a grade of 60% or higher
  • 93% of the students earned a grade of 70% or higher

Can students earn a high school diploma as a Lion Academy student?

• Students can earn a Camp Hill School District diploma taking courses online through the Lion Academy, if they meet state graduation requirements and follow all district policies.

Can the Lion Academy accommodate students with special needs, a disability, or English Language Learners?

• Many students with special needs participate in the Lion Academy because of the flexibility, adaptation, and individualized programs it has available.
• The Lion Academy has a CHSD Special Education staff member who is responsible for collaboration with students, families, and other instructors to develop the student’s IEP or 504 plan and create learning plans that meet student needs.
• Lion Academy courses can be adapted as necessary to assist in meeting educational goals.

Who will students interact with and be supported by the most?

• The key to academic success (other than the student themselves!) is the student’s advisor assigned by Camp Hill School District.
• The advisor’s primary goal is to make sure each of his/her students is making progress and meeting or exceeding academic goals.
• If the advisor sees anything getting off track, it will be addressed with the student, the parent, and instructors as necessary.
• Students are also supported by online teachers, who help to instruct the students and give feedback on performance.

How does the Lion Academy know if my child is staying on task?

• CAOLA utilizes a tracking software that allows advisors to see which contents of lessons were accessed and for how long.
• The software also tracks grades on daily assessments.
• A combination of multiple choice assessments and more creative assignments helps ensure students are submitting individual work and are following course material properly.

How does the Lion Academy report academic progress?

• Progress is tracked and reported in several ways:
  • The student’s dashboard allows parents, students and instructional staff to see grades and incomplete assignments.
  • An achievement alert is issued when a student falls behind in a given content area.
  • Progress is discussed with the family by the school appointed advisor on a regular basis.

What happens if my child falls behind?

• Daily assessments allow students, parents, advisors and instructors to know immediately if a child falls behind.
• If a student fails to meet proficiency, an alert is automatically sent to the student and district appointed advisor that is viewable by parents and instructors.
• The district-appointed advisor will work with the parents and students to help correct the issue.
• Students can receive additional support and guidance in-person by stopping into the Lion Academy Learning Lab.
• The student’s dashboard allows a parent, instructor and district appointed advisor to see student progress daily.

Students interested in participating in the Lion Academy should contact their school counselor to begin the enrollment process. Once approved, families must participate in an orientation meeting and complete appropriate forms
before enrollment. All new student accounts will be ready within 2 school days.

Students participating in the Lion Academy, for both full-time or part-time learning, are responsible for meeting the following outlined Students expectations and policies:

• Students must meet with their School Counselor and/or the Distance Learning Coordinator (DLC) to sign The Lion Academy Student and Parent Agreement Form.
• Students should adhere to the established marking period timelines.
• Students should follow all policies outlined in the Camp Hill School District Student Handbook and The Lion Academy Student Handbook.
• Students should follow the weekly meeting time established with the DLC.
• Students should log into courses and complete the required lessons.
• Students should maintain an open line of communication with the DLC and online CAOLA instructor(s).
• Students must complete the attendance requirement 5 out of 7 days each week.
• Students should notify the DLC and CAOLA teacher(s) of any planned excused absences.
• Students should use appropriate language, proper grammar, and spelling when sending electronic communication.
• Students should follow the CHSD plagiarism guidelines and Technology Acceptable Use Policy.
• Students are required to participate in all state and school-mandated assessments.
